Meet The Daemonite: Brenwin Theunis
Hey, I’m Brenwin and I’m currently working as a Data Consultant at Daemon. I joined Daemon in March 2023, and it has been a challenging yet rewarding journey so far. Being exposed to so many different technologies in a short time can feel overwhelming at first but it has accelerated my growth. With about 11 years in the IT industry, I’ve been in quite a few roles!
How did your career begin?
Right after university, I began my career as an IT Intern, Junior Network Administrator and later transitioned into databases and development where we created systems in a powerful but obscure fourth generation programming language called MAPPER. I’ve had quite a few roles over my career which include programming, SharePoint administration, automation with Power Automate and some data analysis with PowerBI. I also worked as a Support Engineer before joining Daemon as a Data Consultant.
What is your day-to-day like at Daemon?
A typical day for me involves giving my daughter 5x “5 more minutes” before school, dropping her off and trying to do some cardio before work. My work day typically starts with a standup where we discuss the previous day and any issues and our tasks for the day. In the latest project I was on, we created a Finance Data Warehouse for a big insurance company.
The project was exciting because of the exposure to various technologies like AWS and having to integrate them. The company had very large datasets and besides building the solution, we had to develop ways to streamline the ingestions, transformations and serving the data.
What advice would you give to others?
I would say never stop learning, whether it’s technical skills or more about yourself and others. Five minutes a day can give “future you” massive returns in career growth and improved relationships. Another thing is to make time for the important things and people in your life. Life is busy, and it will always be. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the importance of a supportive environment.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy gardening, though I only have about a 60% success rate with keeping my plants alive. I love spending time with my family, hiking and gaming(PCMR). I’m a huge fan of fantasy series like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I’m also a Stormers Rugby supporter and I find inspiration from helping others, which is why I’m part of our Charity Working Group.
Here’s a fun fact about me: I enjoy baking and woodworking but not at the same time. Plus, I have a hidden talent for Karaoke (at least that’s what my wife says!). Career-wise, I aim to expand my cloud and Python knowledge and personally, I would love to travel more with my family.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
